FAQs
Testing
What does the test look and feel like?
Sure, we all cringe when we hear the word "test," but rest assured, the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WCJIV) is nothing to stress about! No multiple choice. Learner-friendly. Many oral sections don't require writing. Plus, not all testing experiences are created equal! We treat the testing session as a chance to SHOW OFF what the learner knows.
The Basic Administration includes 10 subtests, and each starts low (where confidence is high) and keeps going until the learner hits their threshold and can no longer answer, typically at a point where the learner themselves realize it's beyond what they know. The session is low- to no-stress, and we celebrate together. Detailed, accurate results are delivered in person after ~2.5 hours of testing, providing parents with instructional guidance and specific recommendations based on how the learner responds. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, and parents receive a consultation to review the scores so they leave feeling empowered and informed to take on the next steps in their homeschooling journey.
For other testing options, the duration is a bit longer and results must be mailed off for scoring. Feel free to reach out with specific questions and our consultants would be honored to help you decide which test administration would work best for your learner(s) and your family!
Where do parents and siblings go during the testing session?
Testing takes place in a private neighborhood community center, which provides a comfortable home-like environment that includes Wifi, a sitting area for parents, a television and toys for siblings to enjoy, and a mini-kitchen! Some families choose to drop off the learner for the testing session and return for the consultation, while others choose to stay. Do what works best for you and your learner!
I need multiple children included in the testing session. How does that work?
With the Woodcock-Johnson IV, we capitalize on the sections that can be administered as a group, and we begin by testing together to maximize time (and normalize the experience for one another, keeping stress low). After the group administration is complete, students then complete their sections one at a time while the others hang out in the sitting area. Consultations will occur immediately following the conclusion of all testing, which can be by family or by learner, depending on the group dynamics.
I have a neurodivergent learner whose needs are different. Will the testing experience be the same?
We are here to serve ALL families and will adjust to ensure the environment feels supportive, encouraging, and empowering for ALL learners. Administration of a standardized test cannot be changed, but we offer breaks between sections, fidgets throughout the testing session, and unwavering encouragement (with attempts at humor and fun) to ensure comfort and promote confidence for every learner, regardless of ability or age.
How can I help my learner prepare for the testing session?
First things first - don't refer to it as a "test." Reframe all communication to describe the time as an opportunity for them to SHOW OFF their skills and help you discover what areas and skills were covered well and mastered in the year and see if there's anything that needs more practice. The subtests feel like separate activities, and some will require an oral response, while other parts will involve writing short answers. Overall, some clients tend to call it "school" for the day because the session feels very similar to the learning activities that you do at home.
When should we test?
Some families choose to test in March, some in July, some in November, and some everywhere in between. There's no BEST TIME, but the BEST PRACTICE is to test at the same time each year. The WCJIV is designed to accurately assess proficiency based on the month of the year, and normed to other students in the same grade with a similar testing date. Families may find it beneficial to discover or validate weaknesses with a few months remaining in their school calendar. Others prefer to test before the annual NCHE Thrive! conference (in May) to be prepared for curriculum purchases and decisions at the vendor fair. Some enjoy the discounts offered in the fall and winter and choose their testing session based on what aligns financially.
Regardless of when you choose to test, be sure to test around the same time each year to more accurately see, track, and celebrate growth from year to year!
Are there discounts available?
Of course!! Friend groups, co-ops, and private schools can all receive cheaper rates with the commitment of testing 8+ students. There is a discount for new homeschooling families, and we offer discounts during the fall and winter months. Reach out for more info or if you have questions!
Personalized Solutions
What are personalized solutions?
Every learner is different. Sometimes, a different approach, visual, or plan can make all the difference. We are here to collaborate and develop solutions to meet you where you are and help your learner work through their current struggle to the point of success and celebration.
Do you ONLY work with homeschooling families?
Nope! Though we initially began serving homeschooling families, we've had many clients reach out for homework or transition help and are now serving families with learners in public, private, and charter learning environments. With previous experience in both teacher and administration roles in public as well as private Montessori schools, we know the ins and outs of multiple settings and are fully prepared to provide support accordingly.
Can we work with you in person?
At this time, we only provide virtual solution services but offer Zoom sessions to help make the human connection real.
